Meet Egypt’s 2nd Female Governor, Ever

Dr. Manal Awad Mikhail was appointed governor of Damietta, to become the second ever female governor in Egypt. The first was Nadia Abdou who was appointed governor of Beheira in 2017.

Prior to her post as governor of Damietta, Mikhail, 51, worked as deputy governor of Giza for environment affairs and community development. She was responsible for the development of disadvantaged communities in the Giza governorate. Her efforts in Giza awarded her the UNESCO Prize for Learning Cities for the year 2017.

In 2007, she received the State Awards in Science for her scientific research in the field of infection and viruses. She has published several research papers and studies in the field of immunological studies and vaccines for livestock and poultry. She also worked as Deputy Director of the Veterinary Serum and Vaccine Research Institute (VSVRI), Ministry of Agriculture. 

Dr. Michael is a member of the Egyptian Medical Association for Poultry, the International Veterinary Society for Poultry, the Egyptian Society for Immunology and the Egyptian Society of Virology.

She obtained her Bachelor of Veterinary Science, from Banha University in 1989, and a Master from Alexandria University in 1995, and a PhD in Medical Sciences, from Alexandria University, 1999.
