The execution of Mohamed Adel was carried out on Wednesday for the killing of 21-year-old university student Nayera Ashraf in Mansoura on 20 June 2022. the sentence was carried out in Gamasa prison after the Court of Cassation upheld the death sentence in February.

Adel had stabbed Ashraf multiple times at the gate of Mansoura University where she studied. Her death shocked the Egyptian society. Investigations revealed testimonies of Ashraf’s friends and colleagues stating that Adel had consistently stalked and threatened her following her rejection of his marriage proposal. The victim’s family had previously filed many complaints to the police, obtaining a restraining order two months before her murder.

During the trial, the prosecution presented to the court 25 eyewitnesses, including students and university guards who witnessed the murder.  

The Criminal Court handed Adel a death sentence in July 2022 for the premeditated murder of Naira Ashraf.
