Flavors From the South | Esna Women Compete to Create Delicious Traditional Dishes | Photos

Forty local women from Esna, Luxor, competed in the cooking competition, “Esna’s Traditional Dishes”. The competition targeted local women, 18 years of age or older. The women shared their recipes for local food and the stories behind these dishes.

Esna’s Traditional Dishes completion is part of “VISIT-Esna” project, which aims to document local history and culture, and highlight the diversity and richness of the intangible heritage of the city of Esna.

The best traditional dishes were selected by a specialized jury, to enter the second phase of the competition in mid-August 2023. Prizes will be presented to the winners in a special ceremony in the final phase. “As we launched the cooking competition of the local women of Esna, we were struck by how those amazing women can cook their traditional dishes to perfection,” said the jury members, who they all sampled the delicious recipes.

This competition came as a great opportunity for local women to showcase their talents and expertise in traditional cooking. It also encourages the preservation of food heritage and promotes the role of women in the cultural tourism industry.

Esna’s Traditional Dishes is part of the USAID funded project “VISIT-Esna” implemented by Takween ICD in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and the Luxor Governorate.
