A study published by JAMA revealed that exposure to artificial light at night while sleeping is associated with increased weight. According to the study, women who are exposed to artificial light while they are asleep are likely to be heavier than women who sleep in the dark. In addition, 17% of women exposed to light while they are asleep for extended periods were more likely to gain weight.

While a high-calorie diet and sedentary behaviors are the most common cause for obesity, the study revealed that, exposure to artificial light at night may be a contributing factor to the rapid increase of obesity in the last few decades. Artificial light exposure includes small nightlight in the room, light outside the room, light of television in the room, and other screen-based electronic devices, including smartphones, computers, tablets, and e-readers.

Exposure to artificial light at night disrupts the circadian rhythm, which is the body’s biological clock that regulates its functions and processes, and this can cause obesity.
