One-third (33%) of young German men think violence against women is acceptable, according to a survey from the children’s charity Plan International. The results of the survey were published in the German newspaper Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, as CNN reported.

The organization surveyed a group of 1,000 men and 1,000 women between the ages of 18 and 35, asking their views on masculinity.

More than two-thirds of the women disagreed, favoring relationships with equal responsibilities.

Of the men surveyed, 34% said they had been violent toward a female partner in the past in an attempt to “instill respect in them.” In addition, 33% of the men said it would be acceptable if their “hand slipped” during an argument with their partner.

The survey also found that 52% of men wanted a relationship in which they would be the sole breadwinner while their partner took care of their home and children. Over than two-thirds of the women disagreed, favoring relationships with equal responsibilities.

A German group called the Federal Organization for Equality wrote on Twitter that the findings were “shocking.”

According to data from Germany’s Federal Criminal Police (BKA), 115,000 women in Germany were victims of partner violence in 2021, CNN reported.
