Egyptian tennis star Mayar Sherif suffered an early exit from Wimbledon after losing to Rebeka Masarova of Spain on the first day of the Grand Slam tournament on Monday.

Sherif, ranked world number 31, lost 2-1 to Masarova (66) in a closely contested match that ended in a tie-break.

After losing the first set 7-5, Sherif bounced back to win the second 6-3. The third set was a hard-fought affair for both players, but Masarova emerged victorious with a 7-6 win after a super tie-break (10-6).

While this was Sherif’s first appearance at Wimbledon, she had previously played in eight Grand Slam tournaments, starting in 2020 when she was eliminated from the first round of the Roland Garros.

In June 2023, Sherif won the Valencia Open 2023 title and the WTA Makarska 2023 title in Croatia.
