University of Manchester UK honors Dr. Amani Abou Zeid as Global Development Leader

The University of Manchester UK honors Dr. Amani Abou Zeid as Global Development Leader by engraving her name on the Bicentenary installation.

On June 6, 2024, the University of Manchester celebrated its bicentenary, marking its founding in 1824 and its contributions to global science, research, and innovation. As part of the celebrations, a ‘Bicentenary Way’ installation was erected on campus to honor the university’s global community.

Among those honored is Dr. Amani Abou Zeid, a university alumna and African Union Commissioner for infrastructure, energy, and digitization, who was selected as a Global Development Leader.

The installation features hexagonal stones recognizing key figures and groups associated with the University of Manchester, including Nobel laureates like Niels Bohr, Arthur Lewis, and Joseph Stiglitz, as well as other pioneers, social progress leaders, distinguished alumni, and the founding institutions.

An online feature with biographies of the honorees was also launched that day.

Dr Amani Abou-Zeid graduated from the University’s Global Development Institute with a PhD in Socio-economic Development in 2001 and would become Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy for the African Union. She became Chair of the Global Development Institute’s International Advisory Board for the African Cities Research Centre.

Dr. Abou-Zeid’s career, marked by globally recognized achievements for Africa’s integration and wellbeing, has earned her multiple high-profile awards, including repeated recognition as one of Africa’s Most Influential Women, decorations from several countries, and an honorary doctorate from the University in 2022.

Dr Amani Abou-Zeid has a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from Cairo University; MBA in project management from the French University for African Development (Université Senghor); Masters of Public Administration (MPA) from Harvard School of Government; and Ph.D. in Social and Economic Development from The University of Manchester, UK.

She also has a degree DES in Arts from Université Sorbonne-Paris IV.

Dr. Abou-Zeid has received numerous international honors and awards for her leadership and excellence. With extensive strategic and operational experience across Africa, she has been elected twice as AU Commissioner and serves on many high-level global committees and institutions.
