Emerging Egyptian fashion designers are stirring waves on the runways in Egypt and abroad. Their innovative creations are redefining fashion trends and setting new cultural influences.

Inspired by the inherited rich cultural heritage of Egypt, Ellen Diskores is creating fashion that pays tribute to and reflects Egypt’s history, diversity and identity.

Ellen Diskores departed from her role as a fashion instructor at Cairo Design District, to start an exquisite fashion brand, Wrth. “Well, ورث means inheritance. Egypt’s history is rich with culture, fashion, art, and creativity. As a designer, I want to revive the beautiful history we inherited through my work,” Diskores explained the meaning behind her brand name. “Our brand name reflects the treasure we inherited from Egyptian artists who inspired us to become artists in the first place.”

The brand aims to revive Egyptian art by weaving stories throughout various periods in history, into contemporary fashion. “My designs are contemporary and tell historic tales. The quality, especially the material, is carefully planned to reflect and honor the art presented in the designs.”

For their inaugural season, Wrth launched two collections inspired by Ancient Egypt. “This season [2023] we introduced Coptic art, and the seasons to come, we will feature more art made on Egyptian soil,” Ellen told WoEgypt.

Diskores recognized the potential to translate the symbolism of Coptic art into designs that resonate with a diverse audience in Egypt and abroad. “Coptic art is an integral component of Egyptian art, especially that they were top fashion designers. They employed techniques like embroidery, woven designs, and created top quality fabrics. Coptic art and textiles are a testament to the creativity, skill, and spiritual devotion of the Coptic community. They continue to inspire artists, designers, and art enthusiasts, bridging the gap between ancient traditions and contemporary expressions of art and fashion; which is unsurprisingly our mission.”

Diskores’ meticulous research into Coptic patterns, motifs, and artistry is evident in each piece. “The fashion we created are inspired from the Coptic period with all of its beauty. Fashion, art, and artists. You can see in the Warrior shirt the strip taken from existing Coptic Tunics. Also, the inclusion of Coptic art was a carefully crafted way of textile design.”

Diskores doesn’t envision Wrth as just a fashion brand, but a cultural celebration where each piece is a canvas that tells stories that span across history.  “We hope our creations bring our customers a sense of nostalgia, comfort in inherited art, and a guaranteed feeling of being the coolest person in the room,” Ellen concluded.
