A Couple’s Journey to Start a Camp in Nuweiba, South Sinai

Basant Magdy and Michael Heshmat left the hustle and bustle of the big city seeking a quieter life and to bond with nature. They couple moved from Cairo to Sinai in 2018 They built their first camp in Abu Gallum. When they started, they did everything themselves, from cooking and cleaning, to fetching  water from the well to the camp, and communicating with customers.

After a while, and due to unexpected circumstances, they moved the camp to ​​Bir Swer, Taba. At that time women were not allowed to live in the area for security reasons, but Bassant insisted to stay and keep the camp opened. By time and a lot of hard work and perseverance, the business improved. With the increasing number of  visitors and guests, the couple hired a small team to help them. 

Basant and Michael  idea for the camp has always been to create a small, safe community, in which they celebrate their joys, holidays and sorrows together, sharing food, excursions, climbing mountains and discovering the surrounding nature, and finally this was achieved. 

Unfortunately, after the business started to grow, the news came that he had to evacuate the place. It was painful news, but they did not despair. They rented another camp in Ras Shaitan. They renovated the new place and successfully operated for few months, before they had to leave again because the owners decided to increase the rent.

On their quest to find a new place, Basant worked in the tourism across Sinai,m in Dahab, Nuweiba, Abu Galum, Sharm El-Sheikh, and learnt about  many activities such as diving and kitesurfing, to gain more experience in these fields. 

Finally, the couple found a new place in Nuweiba, to build a camp. And with the experience they gained along their journey, the are ready to settle and share the beauty of the place with tourists from all over the world and to serve them delicious Egyptian food.
