As a little girl living in Egypt, she was determined to be an archaeologist and encouraged to do so by her mother—even despite the fact that it was, and still is, a male-dominated field.

Dr. Monica Hanna has dedicated more than half her life to protecting and preserving the cultural heritage of Egypt. She completed her undergraduate degree in Egyptology and Archaeological Chemistry at the American University in Cairo and later completed her doctorate at the University of Pisa, Italy. She is campaigning to bring back to Egypt the stolen monuments.

Today, she is not just a leading archaeologist, but also a celebrated scholar, Founding Dean of the Cultural Heritage and Archaeology Unit at The Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, and an inspiration to women in the Arab world including her 5-year-old daughter.

Dr. Hanna is enriching the world’s understanding of Egypt’s heritage, helping to attract visitors from across the globe, and bridging the gap between a new generation and its cultural history. In preserving Egypt’s legacy, you could say that she’s created her own.

She is working on a book on the social histories of archaeological sites, which is to be published by Humboldt University.

  1. I talked to Dr Monica Hanna on Facebook a few years ago when there was all the Antiquities being stolen. Dr Monica Hanna was very brave and I haven’t talked to her since I heard from her, and I’m really concerned that she okay. I would like to hear from her I don’t see any active accounts on Facebook or anything, but please I hope this message gets to her and so I can know if she is in good health and everything is fine.
