Associated Press investigative reporter Maggie Michael and photojournalist Nariman El-Mofty won the 2019 Michael Kelly Award for their extensive coverage of the conflict in Yemen. This award comes one month after they won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for the same reporting. The Michael Kelly Award, sponsored by the Atlantic Media Company, is awarded for “the fearless pursuit and expression of truth”; the prize is $25,000 for the winners.  Michael and Mofty are the first Egyptians to win both prizes.

According to the Associated Press, Maggie Michael, Nariman El-Mofty and Yemeni journalist Maad al-Zikry won these awards for their compelling coverage of the conflict in Yemen and the ensuing humanitarian crisis, including a series of deep investigative stories, photos and videos chronicling atrocities spawned by the war.

The Pulitzer Prize is American journalism’s most prestigious honor. The award was established in 1917 by publisher Joseph Pulitzer to honor the achievements of outstanding journalists.
