Egyptian Fencer, Aya Madany, Wins the African Title

In an impressive comeback from retirement, Aya Medany, 30, the Modern Pentathlon champion, won the gold medal and the African title in the 2018 African Fencing Championship. The Campionship was held at the El Menzah Sports Palace in Tunis, Tunisia from June 5 to June 9. Medany grabbed the gold medal after beating her Egyptian counterpart Nardeen Ehab 15-13.

34666108_1323893017755000_5873778599491796992_nBefore her retirement, Medany, the teaching assistant at the Arab Academy of Science and Technology, represented Egypt in three Summer Olympics; 2004 in Athens, Greece, 2008 in Beijing, China and 2012 London, the UK. Moreover, she was both the youngest Egyptian and pentathlon athlete to participate in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. She was just 15.

Medani won the junior world championship title in 2006 and 2008. She won 4 individual gold medals at the African Championships and the world cup in Budapest in 2011. She had announced her retirement in 2013 due to sports injuries.

In August 2016, she was appointed at the Athletes Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Her appointment came after winning the 2016 Women and Sports Awards, representing Africa. Medany is considered one of the best female athletes in Africa.
